hi luthites, does anyone have pics of guitar mold with convertible cutaway sections?? i wanna try and make one but would like to see how its done currently, ta paddy |

I don't have pics, but it's not hard to do. I built a standard mold & then attached the cutaway section using thin birch ply plates top & bottom. Rout out the mold & the cutaway piece so the plates are flush with the surface. I used 6 screws on each plate to hold it all together. It works fine. Sure beats building two molds... & you can change the shape of your cutaway any time. |

I'm about to do the same, Paddy. And I was just about to post the same question when I saw your post... I have prebent sides from the Martin D28 cutaway kit. Should I just lay out the sides in the D-28 mold and trace the cutaway section onto a template and rout the birch ply plates according to the traced template? Or is there a better way to ensure the proper fit to the prebent cutaway section on the side? |

Me too, I'll be making a signature series and want to do the same type of mold... should be pretty easy. I plan to do it the same way as Daniel described! |

Might I ask why you need a cutaway section at all . I have built a lot of cutaways, and dont own a specific cutaway mold. Once the wood is bent , cut to size to fit into the mold (sans blocks), gluing on the blocks makes it all solid enough to get the kerfing on (then its really solid). Then you have no real need for one from there anyway. the most important part is to get the cutaway bent to your pattern shape, then cut to length to fit properly with the other side (or sides in case of a florentine) |

its not so much that i need one, its that i would like to try one, and i havent seen too much info, and thought i would try and check out whats out there,

Glad to know it's not essential. This is my first build, so I wasn't sure if it would be unwise to *not* have a cutaway block inside the mold as well. Thanks Tony! |

This is how I do mine. Tony's right that it's not really needed on the molds. But I also do my bending forms this way. So I've got half as many bending forms as many people. I'll take some pics tomorrow. |

Hi there Pady... These are the only pics I had on hand at work... but, you can see I just added the cutaway section to the mold...
